Quick answers
How does scanning work?
There are two ways to scan.
Barcode: point your camera at the product's barcode. The app looks the product up in open product databases and checks its ingredient list.
Photo of the ingredients: take a clear, well-lit photo of the ingredient list on the packaging. After you agree in the app, the photo is sent to Google's Gemini AI, which reads the ingredients. We never store the photo.
Either way, each ingredient is marked halal, haram or doubtful (mushbooh) with a short reason, and the product gets an overall result. Results are guidance, not a religious ruling or a halal certification: look for a trusted certification mark on the packaging, and ask a qualified scholar if you are unsure.
Why is a result “doubtful (mushbooh)”?
Some ingredients can come from either plant or animal sources, or from an animal that may not be halal, and the label often does not say which. Common examples are gelatine, emulsifiers such as mono- and diglycerides (E471), rennet in cheese, glycerol (E422) and “natural flavourings”. On a few ingredients, such as carmine (E120), scholars hold different views.
When the source cannot be known from the label, the app marks the ingredient doubtful rather than guess. To be sure, look for a trusted halal certification mark, contact the manufacturer about the ingredient's source, or ask a qualified scholar.
What if a product is not found?
Product databases do not know every product, especially new, local or own-brand items. If a barcode is not found, or the product has no ingredient list in the database, take a photo of the ingredient list on the packaging instead.
How does the free daily scan work?
Without a subscription you get one free scan each day, by barcode or by photo. When you have used it, a new free scan is available the next day. If you want to scan more, you can subscribe to Premium, weekly or yearly, in the app. Prices are shown in the app before you buy.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed by Apple. On your iPhone, open the Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose Zabihah AI and tap Cancel Subscription.
Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date and you will not be charged again. Premium stays on until the end of the period you have paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
How do I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, choose the Zabihah AI purchase and select Request a refund. Apple decides on refund requests.
How do I restore my purchase on a new phone?
Make sure you are signed in to the App Store with the same Apple ID you subscribed with. Then open Zabihah AI and tap Restore purchases. There is no account to sign in to; your subscription is linked to your Apple ID.
How do I stop sending photos to AI?
Open the app's Settings and turn off sharing photos with AI. Photo scans then stop working, and barcode scans keep working. You can turn it back on at any time.
For a barcode scan, no photo is sent: our server sends the product's ingredient text, from the product database, to Google's Gemini AI. See the privacy policy for details.
How do I delete my data?
Your scan history and label photos are only on your phone. In the app, open Settings and tap Delete my data, or delete single scans from your history. Deleting the app also removes them.
If you sent us feedback on a result or a support message, ask us to delete it using the form below or by emailing contact@theapptor.com. See Delete your data.
Send us a message
The app has the same form in its Settings. Sending from there can include your app version, which helps us fix problems faster.
